Can a gossip site that covers celebrity and ‘local’ gossip put a photo of you up and say something about you and let people comment about you as well? For some reason I thought there was a law protecting people from such slander.

What are your personal feelings about gossip in the workplace? Are you generally for it or against it? Whether you like or detest office gossip, there is a good chance you will encounter it at one point or another, so it would behoove you to be prepared. You will pick up instruction on how to deal with gossip in the workplace.

One method you can incorporate to deal with gossip at work is to probe. If a fellow employee says something about someone else without providing evidence that supports his or her claim, you can express a sense of curiosity. Here is an example you can follow:

Fellow Employee: “Have you found out what happened between Bobby and Kelly? They locked themselves up in the hallway closet and engaged in *** with each other on their lunch break.”

You: “Is that so? How did you find out about it? Did you hear about this incident from someone else or did you personally see the alleged act? Do you possess any photographs or video footage of this?”

Fellow Employee: “No. I do not have any pictures but I know it happened.”

You: “Thank you for the information you have conveyed. I hope you are telling the truth and not just spreading a rumor. I’ll talk with you later.”

You can attempt to deal with rumors that are spread at the office by becoming passive and stoic. You might be better off and create a conductive use of your time by ignoring gossip you encounter. If you do not display a reaction to information you doubt is accurate and therefore walk away, you might discourage the rumor spreader; after all, some people who like to do weird things or stir up trouble crave attention.

Make your own determination on when it is necessary to interfere with the spreading of rumors. For example, if there are too many important things to be done, you could say, “I take pleasure in hearing what you have to say but now is not an appropriate time to discuss what appears to be gossip because there is so much important stuff we have to do. Please bring up this matter again at a later time.”

Take a stand on office gossip if it is necessary. If someone does it repeatedly and it annoys you, ask him or her to stop.

Another method you can use to deal with gossip at work is to embrace it. If someone presents claims that appear to be harmless and you need something to cheer you up, you can go along with what the rumor spreader says.

Do the things you have learned to deal with gossip at work!

Gossip can be very unpleasant and you are right to be concerned. In fact, I believe that gossip can not only be hurtful, but it can even be deadly: good people have been destroyed by rumors!

In the case of your office, you say there are “a number of people” which would suggest that there is likely a Culture of Gossip which is even more troubling.

While there may be certain people who view gossip as simply harmless small talk about other employees – who are not a part of the conversation – it should nearly always be considered unethical.

Gossip is generally composed of inaccurate information and, in my experience, is it usually designed to embarrass or wound in some way.

The Culture of Gossip in your office probably can’t be eliminated completely, but it certainly can be reduced using a few basic strategies.

First, commit yourself to breaking the gossip cycle: if you happen to be present when a rumor is shared, be sure not to pass it on – to anyone.

Second, if you feel comfortable doing so, approach people who are gossiping and share something positive you know about the person they are discussing; be careful not to accuse them of unethical conduct, even if you believe it to be the case.

Third, attempt to evaluate each discussion in social settings, such as in the lunch room and photocopy room, for example, and identify the source of the gossip. You may discover that there is one “ringleader” who is the most obvious offender.

And, fourth, as a courtesy to a recipient of gossip, alert them to the situation and offer to support the employee. The individual may be surprised, even hurt, to know that his or her name has been slandered to some degree.

It is important to remember that the Culture of Gossip needs the tacit approval of virtually everyone in an office to flourish. Your concern and gentle intervention will have a significant impact on its acceptance and will bring gossipers to account for their cruel behavior.

This is a very curious question, I would like to know how does it make you feel when someone you love or care about gossips bad things about you, or how does it feel when just people in general gossip about you. Whats your take?

Is it really possible to always mind your business? There is a place around here that pays GREAT! But I have heard from several people that is terrible for gossip. I want to apply there then, if I get the job, just keep focused on work and keep to myself as much as possible. But I am nervous that will alienate me. What would I do if someone tells me something I don’t want to hear?

I ask this because I’m slowly finding myself knowing ridiculous facts about celebrities. Being flooded more and more with gossip about people who don’t mean anything to me. I was thinking of making a change and completely staving off gossip mags, fashion mags etc.

I had this terrible thought that I’d wake up one day and wished I’d spent all that watching and reading on something that would actually be useful to me and has real substance.

Idle talk and even rumors about your personal affairs can result in humiliation and your feelings being hurt. But, to be honest, you have probably participated in this talk about others. But what will you do when the talk is about you?

When you hear something you should first try to determine its source. Sometimes the source is the person who is telling you what is being said. When you hear gossip about yourself or others be direct and indicate that what they are saying is hurtful and that you will not participate in the conversation. One good way to avoid being drawn in to these discussions is to change the subject.

Be careful of what you say when you are around others especially the people who are known to talk about others. This may be hard and you might feel like you cannot be yourself at all times but you will not be providing any new material for people to talk about if you watch what you say. Only tell your most secret things to those you can trust, or better yet to no one at all. If one person knows something you can be sure almost everyone will know it. How often are you told something in confidence only to tell your significant other or trusted friend? You can trust them – they are your friends. Well don’t be a victim of trusting anyone with topics that you do not want talked about.

Now something is out there in the rumor mill about you so you should just get over it, move on and let it go. Your reaction can either make the gossip continue or not, if you ignore what is being said people will eventually become tired with it and move on to something else themselves.

Don’t retaliate by attacking or spreading gossip of your own. This will not have a result that you will be happy with. You could end up in an all out gossip war with feelings being hurt beyond repair.

When you hear things being said about you that are false you should correct the information and get the correct information out. Remaining cool headed and correcting the false information with facts is one of the best ways to deal with gossip about you that is inaccurate.

Be strong and weather the storm of gossip and do not be drawn into gossip as retaliation. Soon, after it dies down or the topic has moved on to something or someone else you will not be the center of attention and life will move on. If you don’t participate in talking about others and provide an example you might persuade others to stop talking as well.
